Going form Victorian times to the Charleston was a real jump!! It must have caused many a parent to shutter. They went through the 1920s..at least my parents did, and 30s with its troubles into the 40s and war. Then raised their children in what they hoped was a carefree childhood..one they didn't have. Then they sent their sons off to war... :( Thanks for your commentary and comments and thoughts about the times. Even though I was born in 47 I was young and so reading about the times daily is a good history lesson and makes us understand the people more. I am going to stitch up a cute 'curtain' for my micro. It can be an excuse to get some vintage fabric on ebay. Which, technically, is also cheating, but I consider it my 'catalog' shopping.50sgalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09250940806307766624noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6960946442922071473.post-64800231406811347622009-01-19T20:40:00.000-08:002009-01-19T20:40:00.000-08:00I'm really enjoying your thoughtful commentary on ...I'm really enjoying your thoughtful commentary on living in 1955. We so often dismiss the 50s as a decade of naive consumerism and people playing happy families, but we forget that these same people lived through WWII and all the deprivation and uncertainty and plain awfulness of it. Can we blame them for wanting to start afresh?Piroskahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06665411493895439079noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6960946442922071473.post-51047531510544622372009-01-19T16:20:00.000-08:002009-01-19T16:20:00.000-08:00Your dinner looks lovely! Parchment paper would work great in your cake pans and once you invest in it, you will find other recipes that require it.

I've made that 7 minute frosting a few times myself and you are so right about how good it is! (I know you can't do it now because it's out of your time but, you might want to save this link for the future -Alton Brown's coconut cake with 7 minute frosting. I've made this a few times and while it is a bit of work, it's a lovely cake!)

Regarding your microwave, do you think that you could perhaps tape, pin, or sew some sort of pretty fabric cover for it? I would think that the action of having to uncover it each time would help prevent any unconscious use of it! ;)

Have a good week!Hairball T. By the way, the meatloaf from the recipe you shared turned out fantastic!

I, too, have been enjoying reading your blog. You've been an inspiration to me to be more mindful of taking care of my home and doing more real cooking as opposed to heating up frozen convenience meals. I know exactly what you mean about not having learned the basic domestic skills of yesteryear...at least you're ahead of the curve by the fact you know how to sew....I've never even held a thread and needle in my hands, lol.

I'm not in a position to do the kind of experiment you're undertaking, but I can live it vicariously through you, and be inspired to add more elements/skills of yesteryear to my life. :)Betsyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06961949757283263982noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6960946442922071473.post-5429812554717728942009-01-19T09:01:00.000-08:002009-01-19T09:01:00.000-08:00I've really been enjoying your blog.
