I was in high school in the late 60s and the dress code had altered somewhat (no coats/ties for the young men), but we girls still had to wear dresses. By the time I graduated in January of '71, though, the dress code had been abolished altogether. You can see what has happened since then! Loved the Irwin Shaw reference, too. How did so many years pass since those times?Carole Medleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11041394490876041896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6960946442922071473.post-27497828279934052332010-07-01T07:47:25.771-07:002010-07-01T07:47:25.771-07:00I think just getting uniforms in schools would be ...I think just getting uniforms in schools would be a huge help. We wore skirts, collared shirts, and ties to school every day. We could choose our own jackets and bags within reason (no sports logos or anything obscene for example) but in the class room the bags went under the desk and the jackets were removed.Rhondanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6960946442922071473.post-54831968325987535852010-06-30T18:37:28.310-07:002010-06-30T18:37:28.310-07:00Both my parents are high school teachers and they ...Both my parents are high school teachers and they have seen the consequences of the hands-off computer-parented generation particularly in the last couple of years. And everytime they tried to exercise a little classroom discipline, they'd have an angry parent phoning the school. Now that they're at retirement age, I think they've sadly given up.<br /><br />P.S. It really did make me feel grown up. On a warm day we would ask the teacher for permission to take our jackets off.<br /><br />I like the white bucs on the fellow in the front row. Little to no discipline at home, no manners or ethics taught, no consequences rendered for misbehaving, and they wonder why kids are monsters at school where they are expected to do these things. Then the teachers are slapped with lawsuits if they dare expect little Johnny to toe the line. I was an elementary ed major in college and graduated with a teaching degree....there's a reason why I didn't actually pursue teaching, your post summed it up perfectly.Betsyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06961949757283263982noreply@blogger.com
