30 August 1956 “A Fun Book Making Challenge”

I discovered, hopefully not too late, a fun challenge on a site. The challenge was the questions, “Is the old saying true, Everyone has one book inside of them?” With that in mind we were asked to make up a dummy or idea of a book we would like to make.

So for the “Nuffnang August Blogger Challenge” I thought I would have a go at it. I have often thought that my year in 1955 would make a fun and interesting book. My current busy schedule of both living in the past, running my household, and also trying to create the site to become a sort of vintage community and vintage magazine for all of you takes up quite a bit of my time, not to mention Blog posts. But, I love it all and thought, why not try out this challenge.

So, here it is, my quick thrown together idea for ‘My Book’. (All images can be clicked to view and read full size)

bookcover The cover. This could be done in so many ways, but for this challenge I thought sweet and simple was the way to go.

bookinside A fun introduction is always good, don’t you think. It doesn’t have to be a novel, right?

bookchapters Chapters that leave room for tips and maybe even a rant or two. There would be more than four chapters of course, this is just an ‘overview’ idea.

And, of course, I would want to include many of my food photos.threelayerfudgecakeBecause, a gal can never cook enough, learn enough new recipe nor, it seems, take enough artsy photos of her food. It, much like baking and cooking, is an addiction with me!donuts6biscuits3And, there would be images of various parties and spreads I have done with ideas for more.birthday teaparty5I would want to touch on sewing and fashion, and the general work ethic and kind and considerate manners of the past, all of which many of us would like to bring back and use in our daily life.

Well, that is my silly little post today. I need to get this off, because I just realized that Australia is a day ahead of the USA!

Until tomorrow, then, Happy Homemaking.

  2. Oh, thank you Jenn, how kind. I had only found out about this idea recently, so it is rather 'thrown together' but it was a good idea because it pushed me to put some ideas down visually. Being a rather visual person, this really helped me to consider and think about how I would do such a book. I think I would also include some of the really good posts/comments from 1955 as well, if I ever did do it as a book. It would be a fun project, that is for sure.

  3. I also realize there are some typos and errors in the written bit of the open book image, but I was rather rushed to get it off today. If I did do a book, of course, there would be some serious proof reading.

  6. It's a fantastic idea! It would be really popular. And it would be written from the heart, which is so important.

    Go for it!

  7. "...see just what the past can do for your future."

Brilliantly said! If I saw your book at the store, I would buy it, too!

  8. Make sure you copyright this! This could be a best-seller -- don't allow yourself to get ripped off monetarily. Loads of people would buy this book.

  9. I wonder how one copyrights such an idea. I was under the assumption that my publishing it here with my ideas in my blog dated copyrights it, but I wonder if that is the case?

  10. Oh, and thank you TWUS for saying it could be a best seller. That is very flattering, but not sure how many people out there would be interested in my little ole' book. It is kind to know that if I do consider making such a book there is some interest. Such kind ladies you all are.

  11. I don't know how to get a copyright. I don't think just having a blog automatically gets you a copyright. I do see many copyrighted blogs, but I don't know how they did it. Retro is very big now, and I think you could sell your book! Your stuff is very well researched, your enthusiasm shows, your personality comes across nicely, and you are not doing this in a slap-dash fly-by-night manner. You are doing your best to actually live this. I think it resonates with a lot of people who long for a simpler time.

  12. Wow, thank you all for your support. Perhaps I shall put my 'book idea' forward from the back burner to the front.
TWUS-Thank you, I am glad my heartfelt joy of my research and writing shines through.

  14. Wow! What a really great idea. I would buy it! I just wanted to say hi and I still read your blog although I have been missing for awhile this summer doing the canning thing...I swear it seems that for a day of actual work in the kitchen, I have to straighten up 2 days thereafter. Am I doing something wrong? Any tips? Just now things are slowing down and I am loving reading your posts again. I am so glad I have this blog to go to..kinda my retreat from this world...Good luck with your tenants...been there done that....Barbara

  15. I’m SO disappointed! :( Seeing this blog post I thought you actually HAD written a book and went straight to Amazon to buy it, but alas, you haven’t! Shame on you, fooling me like that. Now you simply HAVE to write that book, or I’ll curse your cakes so your sugar tastes like salt (and reverse), your hens won’t lay eggs, your cleaning will make your home even dirtier, you will gain weight and not be able to fit your beautiful dresses, etc.

Just kiddin’, but your books sounds and looks SO good – please write it dear, and it will be my favourite, I know this beforehand. Can I preorder it? :)

  16. ...tellin' ya! Copyright this stuff and get in touch with a publisher. You can probably google "how to get a copyright for my blog" and get information. There are also things to sign up for (you have to pay) so that you will be notified if anybody steals your stuff and puts it on their blog. Also, my son tinkered with something in my Blogger settings that prevents anybody from copying your text and pictures. You can't right click and save, or select and copy anything on my blog any more. I'll have to ask him what he did.

  17. Also, I wouldn't change a thing: keep your "rants" and philosophising -- they are what make it special: your personal feelings, etc.

  18. TWUS-You really scared me about my content etc. I hate to be worried about such things and usually assume people are kind and would not wish to steal or take another's idea. I mean it is just a rough outline, they could hardly write what I was to write. But, one must be protected, I suppose. So, with some research I found by putting the copyright info on the bottom of the post and also the images were changed to include copyrights for me and the website, that is some protection.
On a happier note, I was so pleased that a few of you were pleased with the idea of the book, I do think I should 'forge ahead'. I must finish the changes to the website as well, however. Oh, I may need to make a 'busy day cake' with all this to-doing.

  19. That is a neat idea for a book. I write children's books and know how hard it is to get published. (I finally have one under contract! And it is a little vintage, my story takes place in the 1960s)They are all looking for something different and unique, and your idea does look different and unique. Just don't put too much of it on the blog or they will consider it already published (especially if you have a big readership)and publishers don't like that. Take your time, make sure it is well written, maybe have someone else critique it, then send it off!

  20. janet-good advice, thank you. Unfortunately it looks like any of the publishing houses I was considering don't take manuscripts from anyone unless it is through an agent. I have considered an agent but the whole thing sounds so involved. I am still not sure, but we shall see. I am in no big hurry and really enjoy the topics I now right about and my lifestyle, so no worries. You will have to let us know about your book.

  21. Put me down as another person who would buy your book,i think it looks fabulous.Well done!!
I luv your blog & your perspective on life:)

  22. I apologize for scaring you; didn't mean to do that.

  23. Donna, you could self-publish it and sell it through your site or Amazon or both. There is an internet-based self-publishing company, the name escapes me at the moment. I think they'll explain how to deal with copyright issues, too.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Aah, got it. It's called Lulu.com.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thank you for the tip anon-Lulu looks rather good as they also let you publish your book digitally which would allow me to sell it to readers cheaper. I think the company that is hosting the challenge I entered is also a self publisher I think.
I like the idea of self publishing, because I am not sure the 'jump through the hoop' and 'hurry up and sell your book in 6 months' way of publishing companies is my cup of tea. And, of course, we homemakers often like to 'do it ourselves' anyway. Perhaps we are so good at DIY because we are such busy-bodies that we must be into the whole process ourselves! True artists, are we!

  26. You are welcome, Donna!
I always read your blog with pleasure.
