12 November 1956 “Busy Gal”

womanwdishes You simply can’t imagine the number of dishes and kitchen to-doing there is when one is knee deep in peanut brittle, toffee, Jams, and sticker making. Well, most likely you can, especially you mother’s who are probably constantly at war with dishes and mess piling up. But, even an organized (well more so than two years ago) 50’s gal can get a little behind.

I have been busily making candies and jam for a sale this weekend I am doing with a friend. It is hardly an excuse to not do a proper blog post, but there it is. Wish me luck on my sale and have a good Saturday, I shall return Sunday Evening with a Q & A or maybe just a good gossip about the sale.

Happy Homemaking.

  2. Picture it: hair in pin curls (it is Friday after all) with a scarf on my head. Apron, lovely, yet worn with love (and I mean both worn upon my old wool skirt as well as round the edges!)some magazine recipes propped up here and there and jars, lids, piles of brittle and I don't know what. I'm a mess...a happy mess.
I figure if I don't sell one little thing, then straight into boxes with ribbon and Happy Christmas everyone, homemade Jams and Candies. Now you know why I chose to make candies and jam, the shelf life can save a gal. The cookies and cakes would be off in a week, but good ole candy and jams, they stick around like old friends; and fruitcake.

  3. In our old house we did not have a dishwasher, everything needed to be washed by hand insert loud ugh, the killer part was the baby bottles.

I have to say out of all the modern gadgets that I can absolutely not do without it has to be my dishwasher :)

  4. Mom in canada-so true. I have to admit, having my dishwasher makes my life much easier. I now, since 1955, use dishes for everything. cream at breakfast, in a pitcher, milk for tea, in a pitcher. When I serve soup for dinner it goes into a tureen and I just don't want packaging and such on my table. Therefore, it is pretty and a lovely place to dine, very important to my day. Especially as this is the place where Hubby and I visit before work and after work at dinner. I rather like it to be pretty. I even have an 'arrangement' always on the table. In the summer fresh flowers from my garden, fall dried hydrangeas or gourds or bittersweet. In the winter, a lovely display of some small houseplants, green that keeps on giving. So, without my dishwasher, the amount of dishes I go through would be a pain. Yet, many did not have dishwashers in the 1950's, though my family did have one by the end of the 50's. I know many European countries didn't see them until the 70's! So, we are spoiled. Yet, I happily grind my own meat in my hand crank grinder or the vintage mixer. I often mash potatoes by hand. I stir up gravies in pans and slice veg and make dough WITHOUT a food processer (though any modern recipe I encounter always says, 'put in food processor on this setting') and I bake bread with my own two little hands (and an oven of course). So, I figure, this little luxury, the dishwasher, is rather fine. And it isn't as if I need to be a martyr to enjoy it, but I find that most things I do in the kitchen I prefer to NOT use a machine, but dishes is NOT one of them. Often I even choose the broom for my wood floors and stair carpet over the old Hoover, just more convenient if you ask me.
Amy-oh, and I must admit, I have had my Christmas albums out for some time now, I don't know, I just feel in the Christmas mood early this year, and yet I haven't bought a single gift. My budget is very small as each year (esp since the 1950's which is odd since that is when consumerism really started) we have wanted to get and receive less and less each year, yet enjoy it more!) NO stress to overspend and shop last minute, I suppose.

  5. Since i have had children I serve supper buffet style off the counter, I find it very hard to enjoy my meal and converse when there are items in the middle, also the added the bonus is that my youngest will not touch anything hot.

  6. Sorry, also meant to say that we eat sitting down at the table, it`s just the actual food stays on the counter, and this way the children can decide for themselves how much of one particular item they wish for :)

  7. I couldn't imagine being without a dishwasher either. There's just the three of us so I'm perfectly capable of doing them by hand but I hate it. I think that partly comes from having endless arguments over dishes with my mother. She favors the bowl of soapy water followed by a wipe down with a tea towel method which I find gross. I favor the wipe with a soapy sponge, rinse, and drip dry method which she thinks uses more water. Of course it doesn't solve everything since she thinks the dishwasher is lazy and less efficient (which it's not, they actually use less resources than hand washing) plus the idea of not doing the dishes right after a meal practically makes her hyperventilate but she has never even been to my house so it's all good.

  8. All the best for your sale of candies. That's a great back-up plan if you have any 'left-overs'. You've been one busy gal. I loved your description in your comments of how you pretty-up the table etc. You've stimulated my creativity... now what can I do... (I love washing dishes by hand but I'm not overwhelmingly inundated by them.)Linda
